How to Calculate Pool Water Volume

Your pool's volume in gallons is the foundation of every other pool maintenance decision you'll make. Every chemical dosage — chlorine, acid, shock, salt — depends on this number. So does pump sizing and heater selection. Get the volume wrong and you're either under-dosing (hello, algae) or over-dosing (hello, bleached swimsuits and wasted money).

I built this calculator because I got tired of doing pencil-and-paper volume math every time someone asked me how much chlorine their pool needed. The formula itself is straightforward: find the area of the pool's surface, multiply by the average depth, then convert cubic feet to gallons by multiplying by 7.48. The tricky part is calculating the surface area, which depends on your pool's shape.

Finding Your Pool's Average Depth

Before calculating volume for any shape, you need the average depth. Most pools aren't uniform in depth, so here's how to get an accurate number:

  1. Measure the depth at the shallow end (in feet)
  2. Measure the depth at the deep end (in feet)
  3. Add both numbers together
  4. Divide by 2 to get your average depth

For example: a pool with a 3-foot shallow end and an 8-foot deep end has an average depth of (3 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.5 feet.

Tip: If your pool has a complex bottom profile (like a steep drop-off or a flat hopper bottom), divide the pool into sections with relatively uniform slopes and calculate each section separately for better accuracy.

Pool Volume Formulas by Shape

Rectangular or Square Pools

The most straightforward calculation. Works for true rectangles and squares.

Formula: Length × Width × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons

Example: A 32 × 16-foot pool with a 5.5-foot average depth: 32 × 16 × 5.5 × 7.48 = 21,113 gallons

Round (Circular) Pools

Common for above-ground pools and some in-ground designs.

Formula: π × Radius² × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons

  1. Measure the diameter of your pool
  2. Divide by 2 to get the radius
  3. Square the radius (multiply it by itself)
  4. Multiply by 3.14159 (π)
  5. Multiply by the average depth
  6. Multiply by 7.48 to convert to gallons

Example: An 18-foot diameter pool with a 4-foot average depth: 3.14 × 9² × 4 × 7.48 = 7,621 gallons

Oval Pools

Treat the oval as an ellipse defined by its long axis (length) and short axis (width).

Formula: π × (Length ÷ 2) × (Width ÷ 2) × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons

Example: A 30 × 15-foot oval pool with a 5-foot average depth: 3.14 × 15 × 7.5 × 5 × 7.48 = 13,186 gallons

Kidney-Shaped Pools

Kidney pools don't have a clean geometric formula, so we use an industry-standard multiplier of 0.585 to approximate the area compared to a rectangle of the same dimensions.

Formula: Length × Width (widest) × Average Depth × 0.585 × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons

Example: A 32 × 16-foot kidney pool with a 5-foot average depth: 32 × 16 × 5 × 0.585 × 7.48 = 11,218 gallons

L-Shaped Pools

Split the pool into two rectangular sections and calculate each one separately.

Formula: (Section A: L × W + Section B: L × W) × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons

Example: Section A is 20 × 16 feet, Section B is 12 × 8 feet, average depth is 5 feet: (20 × 16 + 12 × 8) × 5 × 7.48 = 15,558 gallons

Freeform or Irregular Pools

For custom-shaped pools that don't fit standard formulas:

  1. Break the pool into recognizable geometric sections (rectangles, circles, triangles)
  2. Calculate each section's volume separately
  3. Add all volumes together
  4. For remaining irregular areas, use the closest matching shape formula with the 0.585 kidney multiplier as a conservative estimate

Adjustments for Special Features

Pool features add or subtract water volume from your base calculation:

  • Built-in spas — typically add 400-800 gallons; calculate as a separate small pool and add to total
  • Tanning ledges (Baja shelves) — add 200-500 gallons depending on size and depth (usually 6-12 inches deep)
  • Beach entries — gradually sloped entries hold less water than you'd expect; estimate at roughly 60% of the volume a flat-bottom section of the same area would hold
  • Waterfalls and rock features — usually displace water (reduce volume), but attached catch basins add volume
  • Steps and benches — built-in steps displace water; subtract roughly 20-50 gallons per step section

When Standard Calculations Fall Short

Some pools genuinely need professional measurement:

  • Complex multi-level pools with spas connected via spillover channels
  • Very old pools where the original dimensions are unknown and walls may have shifted
  • Pools with significant depth variations beyond a simple shallow-to-deep slope
  • Commercial or competition pools where precise volume is required by regulation

How many gallons are in a standard residential pool?

Most residential pools hold between 10,000 and 30,000 gallons. A typical 16 × 32-foot pool with a 5-foot average depth holds about 19,200 gallons. Smaller backyard pools (12 × 24) average around 10,800 gallons, while larger pools (20 × 40) can exceed 35,000 gallons.

What does the 7.48 multiplier mean?

The number 7.48 (precisely 7.48052) is the number of US gallons in one cubic foot of water. Since pool dimensions are measured in feet, the volume formula gives you cubic feet — multiplying by 7.48 converts that to gallons.

How do I find the average depth if my pool has a hopper bottom?

A hopper bottom (where the floor drops steeply in the center) doesn't average well with the simple shallow+deep÷2 method. Instead, mentally divide the pool into 3 sections: the shallow flat area, the transition slopes, and the deep hopper area. Calculate each section's volume separately with its own average depth, then add them together.

Can I just use my pool's advertised size?

Manufacturer specifications give a close estimate but may not account for your actual installation — water level, liner fit, step placement, and other as-built conditions affect real volume. For basic chemical dosing, the advertised volume is usually close enough. For precise applications like salt chlorine generators, it's worth verifying with your own measurements.

How do I calculate pool volume in liters?

What's the easiest way to measure my pool?

Use a long tape measure (50-foot or longer) for length and width. For depth, use a marked pole or weighted tape measure lowered into the water. Measure from the waterline, not the coping. For the most accurate results, measure at the water level you typically maintain — usually about halfway up the skimmer opening.
