Your pool's volume in gallons is the foundation of every other pool maintenance decision you'll make. Every chemical dosage — chlorine, acid, shock, salt — depends on this number. So does pump sizing and heater selection. Get the volume wrong and you're either under-dosing (hello, algae) or over-dosing (hello, bleached swimsuits and wasted money).
I built this calculator because I got tired of doing pencil-and-paper volume math every time someone asked me how much chlorine their pool needed. The formula itself is straightforward: find the area of the pool's surface, multiply by the average depth, then convert cubic feet to gallons by multiplying by 7.48. The tricky part is calculating the surface area, which depends on your pool's shape.
Before calculating volume for any shape, you need the average depth. Most pools aren't uniform in depth, so here's how to get an accurate number:
For example: a pool with a 3-foot shallow end and an 8-foot deep end has an average depth of (3 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.5 feet.
Tip: If your pool has a complex bottom profile (like a steep drop-off or a flat hopper bottom), divide the pool into sections with relatively uniform slopes and calculate each section separately for better accuracy.
The most straightforward calculation. Works for true rectangles and squares.
Formula: Length × Width × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons
Example: A 32 × 16-foot pool with a 5.5-foot average depth: 32 × 16 × 5.5 × 7.48 = 21,113 gallons
Common for above-ground pools and some in-ground designs.
Formula: π × Radius² × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons
Example: An 18-foot diameter pool with a 4-foot average depth: 3.14 × 9² × 4 × 7.48 = 7,621 gallons
Treat the oval as an ellipse defined by its long axis (length) and short axis (width).
Formula: π × (Length ÷ 2) × (Width ÷ 2) × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons
Example: A 30 × 15-foot oval pool with a 5-foot average depth: 3.14 × 15 × 7.5 × 5 × 7.48 = 13,186 gallons
Kidney pools don't have a clean geometric formula, so we use an industry-standard multiplier of 0.585 to approximate the area compared to a rectangle of the same dimensions.
Formula: Length × Width (widest) × Average Depth × 0.585 × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons
Example: A 32 × 16-foot kidney pool with a 5-foot average depth: 32 × 16 × 5 × 0.585 × 7.48 = 11,218 gallons
Split the pool into two rectangular sections and calculate each one separately.
Formula: (Section A: L × W + Section B: L × W) × Average Depth × 7.48 = Volume in Gallons
Example: Section A is 20 × 16 feet, Section B is 12 × 8 feet, average depth is 5 feet: (20 × 16 + 12 × 8) × 5 × 7.48 = 15,558 gallons

For these cases, the most accurate method is a flow meter test: fill the pool through a water meter and record the exact gallons used. Some pool service companies also use sonar or laser mapping tools for precise volume measurement.
Most residential pools hold between 10,000 and 30,000 gallons. A typical 16 × 32-foot pool with a 5-foot average depth holds about 19,200 gallons. Smaller backyard pools (12 × 24) average around 10,800 gallons, while larger pools (20 × 40) can exceed 35,000 gallons.
The number 7.48 (precisely 7.48052) is the number of US gallons in one cubic foot of water. Since pool dimensions are measured in feet, the volume formula gives you cubic feet — multiplying by 7.48 converts that to gallons.
A hopper bottom (where the floor drops steeply in the center) doesn't average well with the simple shallow+deep÷2 method. Instead, mentally divide the pool into 3 sections: the shallow flat area, the transition slopes, and the deep hopper area. Calculate each section's volume separately with its own average depth, then add them together.
Manufacturer specifications give a close estimate but may not account for your actual installation — water level, liner fit, step placement, and other as-built conditions affect real volume. For basic chemical dosing, the advertised volume is usually close enough. For precise applications like salt chlorine generators, it's worth verifying with your own measurements.
Calculate the volume in gallons using the formulas above, then multiply by 3.785 to convert to liters. Or if measuring in meters: Length × Width × Average Depth × 1,000 = Volume in Liters (since 1 cubic meter = 1,000 liters). The calculator above supports both imperial and metric units.
Use a long tape measure (50-foot or longer) for length and width. For depth, use a marked pole or weighted tape measure lowered into the water. Measure from the waterline, not the coping. For the most accurate results, measure at the water level you typically maintain — usually about halfway up the skimmer opening.
