After testing 30+ robotic pool cleaners in our test pool, here are the best of the best.

I don't think anyone has tested more robotic pool cleaners than me. For over 5 years, I've tested and reviewed almost every robotic pool cleaner on the market. From the new $4,000 Beatbot AquaSense X to the $100 Aiper Seagull SE, we've tested everything from inground pool cleaners to above-ground cleaners to try to bring you the most in-depth buying guide of the year.

I tested every top robotic pool cleaner of 2026 in my pool. After months of testing, here are my thoughts....

Buying Considerations

Before we get into my top picks, let's talk about what separates the top pool cleaners from the rest. After testing nearly every top robot, I've identified what you want to look for and what you should avoid.

Avoid Cordless Pool Cleaners

Avoid Aiper Pool Cleaners
Avoid Aiper Pool Cleaners // The Pool Nerd

Although cordless pool cleaners seem like a smart idea, they come with serious limitations. Not only do they require daily recharging, but typically they have smaller motors, weaker suction, and significantly worse cleaning performance compared to corded models. You're stuck with 2–3 hour run times, then waiting another 3–5 hours just to recharge. That's not automation—that's babysitting.

And then there's the safety issue. Some serious fire reports have surfaced online about certain cordless pool cleaners. One homeowner reported that their Aiper Seagull Pro allegedly caught fire while charging, resulting in a devastating house fire. The family was safe—along with their cat, who had to be rescued and resuscitated by firefighters.

This isn't an isolated incident. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 22,000 units of Aiper's Elite Pro due to risks of battery overheating and short-circuiting. And as of 2025, the Aiper Seagull Pro was recalled as well.

More and more alleged Aiper Fire videos pop up daily
More and more alleged Aiper Fire videos pop up daily // The Pool Nerd

These incidents highlight the real dangers of lithium-ion batteries in pool robots. For a deeper look at the corded vs cordless debate, I've written a full breakdown.

For this reason, I don't feel comfortable recommending a cordless pool cleaner right now. Corded models outperform them in every single metric I've tested: more suction, better filtration, weekly smart timers for true automation, and zero fire risk. With better performance and peace of mind, corded pool cleaners are the clear choice. Will this change one day? Maybe. But as long as there's a risk of fire and the performance gap is this wide, I'm taking a hard pass.

If you really want a cordless pool cleaner, make sure it is UL or ETL approved
If you really want a cordless pool cleaner, make sure it is UL or ETL approved // The Pool Nerd

If you absolutely want a cordless cleaner, I'll put two of my top picks at the end of this article—but I'd still recommend always going corded, regardless of what brand you go with. Also, make sure you're not buying pool robots on Amazon without checking for restocking fees first.

Avoid Restocking Fees

Some retailers like Amazon charge hefty restocking fees—up to 20%—if you decide to return your pool cleaner. Before making a purchase, check the return policy carefully. Many Amazon sellers hit you with these hidden fees.

At some retailers like Poolbots, Pool Robots, and Pool Express, there's never a restocking fee—and you get a risk-free 30-day trial on every robot. That's a huge advantage, especially when you're investing in a big purchase like a robotic pool cleaner.

Key Features to Look for in a Robotic Pool Cleaner

Here are the features that separate a great pool cleaner from the rest.

1. Corded Power

Corded pool robots deliver consistent power with no recharging
Corded pool robots deliver consistent power with no recharging // The Pool Nerd

Corded robots plug in, turn on, and clean with 4,000+ GPH of continuous power—no drop-off, no dead batteries, and no recharging. They can run on a daily schedule automatically, so your pool stays clean without you ever having to go outside, pull it out, or plug it back in.

Once you go with a corded robot—you'll never look back.

2. A Weekly Smart Timer for Automation

Weekly Timer lets you set and forget (Dolphin Cayman Pictured)
Weekly Timer lets you set and forget (Dolphin Cayman Pictured) // The Pool Nerd

A weekly smart timer is a game-changing feature. It lets you "set and forget" your pool cleaning schedule. Press one button at the start of the week, and the robot turns itself on, cleans, and shuts off—every day, on schedule. That's real automation.

Without a timer, you're manually walking outside to the pool to turn it on every single day. That's not what you paid for. Surprisingly, a lot of budget models strip this feature to cut costs. I personally love having my timer set so I only need to touch my robot once a week to empty the filter. Compare that to turning on and recharging a cordless unit every single day—no thanks.

3. High-Quality Filtration

Standard Mesh Filters (left) vs NanoFilters (right)
Standard Mesh Filters (left) vs NanoFilters (right) // The Pool Nerd

A pool cleaner is only as good as its filtration system. Most budget robots use basic plastic mesh filters with big pores. Fine dirt, algae, and bacteria pass right through. Your pool looks clean on the surface, but the water stays cloudy.

You want a pleated filter. Pleated filters, like NanoFilters, are tightly woven, pleated polyester filters that capture microscopic particles standard filters miss—think HEPA-filter precision for your pool.

Clean vs Dirty NanoFilters
Clean vs Dirty NanoFilters // The Pool Nerd

In my side-by-side testing, the NanoFilters captured a massive amount of particles that would have gone straight through a standard mesh filter. The difference is night and day.

4. Commercial-Grade Motors

Commercial-Grade Motors are the way to go
Commercial-Grade Motors are the way to go // The Pool Nerd

When it comes to robotic pool cleaners, nothing compares to commercial-grade motors. These are the exact same motors found in Dolphin's Wave commercial line—robots that clean public pools, resorts, and water parks, and sell for $2,000 to $8,000+. Both the Dolphin Premier and Dolphin Sigma bring that commercial motor platform to residential pools at a fraction of the price.

What do commercial motors mean? More suction power. Stronger wall climbing. Better waterline grip. Longer lifespan. Parts are readily available and easily replaced—owners report 10+ years of use with minimal repairs. When I tested these side by side against residential-motor robots, the difference was obvious. This class of robot just hits different. Learn more about the Dolphin ProLine™ platform.

5. Full Pool Coverage

You want a pool robot that cleans the floors to the waterline
You want a pool robot that cleans the floors to the waterline // The Pool Nerd

The waterline is the dirtiest part of any pool. That's where 90%+ of bacteria and algae live. If your robot only cleans the floor, you're still out there scrubbing by hand. The best models clean floor, walls, AND waterline—and that's the gold standard for any inground pool.

Beware of Fake Reviews

Before we dive into the top picks, the pool cleaner market is absolutely flooded with fake reviews and low-quality products, often from newer brands with heavy marketing budgets. Many of these products look great online but don't hold up in the real world.

Aiper Scuba S1 Pro's F Fakespot Rating
Aiper Scuba S1 Pro's F Fakespot Rating // The Pool Nerd

I used Mozilla's Fakespot tool to analyze the authenticity of online reviews. Here's what I found:

  • Aiper: Multiple F grades for review reliability.
  • Beatbot: F grade.
  • Winnie: Also an F grade.

On the other hand, reputable brands like Dolphin and Aquabot received solid A grades, proving they're trustworthy. The F ratings for brands like Aiper, Beatbot, and Winnie serve as a clear warning—be cautious when considering these options.

The majority of the best robotic pool cleaners I've tested come from the Dolphin brand. If you want to browse the full lineup, check out our Best Dolphin Pool Cleaners guide or Poolbots' Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaners page—they make it easy to compare different Dolphin models side-by-side.

Now let's dive into my top picks of the year.

Best Entry-Level: Dolphin Escape

Pool Nerd Approved

If you want value, this is the robot to buy.

The Dolphin Escape is designed for small inground pools AND above-ground pools, and it is hands-down one of the best values out there.

Dolphin Escape's MaxBin
Dolphin Escape's MaxBin // The Pool Nerd

Why? The price to power ratio. If you were considering a $300–400 cordless pool robot—I'd highly recommend stretching the budget to this guy.

Now if you do have a larger pool or a complex pool, you should definitely grab one of my next two picks. But I wanted to share this as the best entry-level model—especially for smaller pools.

Part of the Dolphin Max-Series™, this compact powerhouse packs serious cleaning performance that blows away every other budget model I've tested.

Dolphin Escape's HyperBrush dual scrubbing system
Dolphin Escape's HyperBrush dual scrubbing system // The Pool Nerd

Equipped with HyperBrush™ dual scrubbing, the Escape's active brush rotates at twice the speed of other models, tackling tough dirt, algae, and debris with ease. The MaxBin™ holds up to 75% more debris than standard cartridges, which means fewer interruptions. It's incredibly easy to remove, dump, rinse, and snap back in.

SmartNav 2.0™ ensures the Escape maps your pool intelligently and cleans systematically—no random wandering. Dual DC motors deliver 4,000+ GPH of filtration and use 90% less energy than old-school cleaners. At just 14 pounds, it's one of the lightest robots and the easiest to handle.

Dolphin Escape scrubs, vacuums, and cleans like a pro
Dolphin Escape scrubs, vacuums, and cleans like a pro // The Pool Nerd

The Escape cleans floors only for pools up to 33 feet with a 40-foot cable and a 2-year warranty. The weekly timer is not included, but it's available as a $99 power supply upgrade—and I always recommend adding it. NanoFilters are also available as a free upgrade at select retailers as well.

While the Escape doesn't climb walls or clean the waterline, it doesn't need to at this price point. For above-ground pools and small ingrounds on a budget, this is the best option on the market. Add the $99 timer upgrade and the free NanoFilters and this robot punches way above its weight. You can even find it for under $400 with Certified Open Box deals—a steal if you ask me. If you need wall climbing, move up to the Cayman. But for the price, you can't beat the Escape.

Best Overall: Dolphin Premier

Pool Nerd Approved

My personal favorite, the Dolphin Premier, is my go-to recommendation for pool owners who want a reliable, high-performance robotic pool cleaner—and I'm not alone. Publications like USA Today consistently pick the Premier as one of the best robotic pool cleaners.

Dolphin Premier cleaning my pool
Dolphin Premier cleaning my pool // The Pool Nerd

It's hands down one of the best bang-for-your-buck pool cleaners. It is the ONLY robot on my list with a leaf bag. So naturally, if you have a lot of trees near your pool, the Premier is the best robotic pool cleaner for leaves.

Dolphin Premier is my #1 choice for a pool robot
Dolphin Premier is my #1 choice for a pool robot // The Pool Nerd

The Premier has consistently proven itself as one of the most powerful and dependable cleaners. I've had mine for years now, and even after testing countless other models, very few have matched the Premier's combination of power, performance, and value. Some users report having their Dolphin Premier for over a decade—a testament to its durability and build quality.

Here's the thing: the Premier is built on the same commercial-grade platform as Dolphin's Wave 75 model (which costs over $2,500). You're getting those same commercial-grade ProLine™ motors—the ones that clean resorts and public pools—at a residential price. Dual commercial-grade motors deliver over 4,500 gallons per hour of filtration. That's serious suction that picks up everything from large leaves to microscopic particles.

Dolphin Premier is the only Dolphin with a Leaf Bag
Dolphin Premier is the only Dolphin with a Leaf Bag // The Pool Nerd

One of the Premier's standout features is its Multi-Media™ filtration system—the only one in the Dolphin lineup. You get four interchangeable filter options: NanoFilters for the deepest clean, Standard Cartridge Filters for everyday use, an Oversized Leaf Bag for heavy debris (the Premier is the only Dolphin with a leaf bag), and optional disposable debris bags. Swapping between them takes seconds.

Dolphin Premier even includes a NanoFilter panel set
Dolphin Premier even includes a NanoFilter panel set // The Pool Nerd

Then there's Media-Alert™—exclusive to the Premier. This is a light on the power supply that blinks when the filter is full and needs cleaning. No other Dolphin—not even the Sigma—has this. Every other robot makes you guess. The Premier just tells you. This alone is a killer differentiator.

Watch the Premier Review

The Premier covers floor, walls, and waterline for pools up to 50 feet, comes with a 60-foot anti-tangle swivel cord, a weekly smart timer built right into the power supply (no app needed), and a 3-year warranty—50% longer than standard. Say goodbye to tangled cords, recharging hassles, and manual cleaning. This is a true set-it-and-forget-it solution.

Here's the kicker: the Premier has NanoFilters™, Multi-Media™ filtration, Media-Alert™, a weekly smart timer, and a 3-year warranty. The $2,000–$8,000+ Dolphin Wave commercial robots don't have ANY of these features. You're getting commercial power with residential intelligence. That's why the Premier is my #1 pick of the year.

Best Splurge: Dolphin Sigma

Pool Nerd Approved

For pool owners who want the absolute best of the best, the Dolphin Sigma is the top of the line. This is the most advanced robotic pool cleaner you can buy. Part of the Dolphin ProLine™, the Sigma is packed with technology that no other residential robot comes close to matching.

Dolphin Sigma Robotic Pool Cleaner
Dolphin Sigma Robotic Pool Cleaner // The Pool Nerd

Let's start with power. The Sigma is the ONLY pool robot on my list with three commercial-grade ProLine™ motors. Same platform as Dolphin Wave robots that clean resorts and public pools for $2,000–$8,000+. Three motors means more suction, and more power. No other robot on the market matches this.

Dolphin Sigma Waterline Cleaning
Dolphin Sigma Waterline Cleaning // The Pool Nerd

Navigation? The Sigma uses a gyroscope for real-time position tracking—the same kind of technology found in aircraft and spacecraft—paired with SmartNav 3.0™, the most advanced navigation system in any Dolphin. It knows exactly where it is and where it's been.

Dolphin Sigma's myDolphin Plus app
Dolphin Sigma's myDolphin Plus app // The Pool Nerd

And then there's the myDolphin Plus™ app. Wi-Fi connected, control from anywhere. Set exact days and times for cleaning (not just intervals—actual scheduled times like Fridays at 4 PM). Use remote drive to steer it to a dirty spot from your phone. You can even see pool stats like gallons filtered and distance traveled, and even use Siri voice control—just say "Hey Siri, clean my pool" and the Sigma starts working.

Watch the Sigma Review

The Sigma covers floor, walls, and waterline for pools up to 50 feet, comes with NanoFilters™ included, a 60-foot anti-tangle swivel cord, quad scrubbing brushes with independent bi-directional tracks, and a 3-year warranty.

Here's the kicker: the Sigma has NanoFilters™, the myDolphin Plus™ app, a weekly smart timer, and a 3-year warranty—none of which come on the $2,000–$8,000+ Dolphin Wave commercial robots. Commercial power with residential intelligence.

Best for Inground Pools: Dolphin Quantum

Pool Nerd Approved
Dolphin Quantum

Dolphin Quantum

Best for Medium-Sized Inground

Save more with Certified Open Box →

If you want full pool coverage at a great value, the Dolphin Quantum is the easiest recommendation I make. This is the only Dolphin that's both ProLine™ AND Max-Series™—giving you the best of both worlds. Think of it as the "no-regrets" pick.

Dolphin Quantum Waterline Cleaning
Dolphin Quantum Waterline Cleaning // The Pool Nerd

The Quantum cleans floor, walls, and waterline with PowerJet 3D Mobility™ jets that move horizontally along the tile line. NanoFilters™ are included in the box—both XXL NanoFilter™ panels and standard mesh—along with the XXL MaxBin™, the largest filter in the entire Dolphin lineup. We're talking 225% more capacity than standard Dolphin robots and over 400 square inches of filtration surface area.

Includes NanoFilter Panels for its XXL MaxBin
Includes NanoFilter Panels for its XXL MaxBin // The Pool Nerd

This basket is significantly larger than the MaxBin in the Cayman and Escape. It's a big upgrade and with the included NanoFilters, it does a great job at catching the nitty gritty.

Dolphin Quantum defying gravity climbing the wall
Dolphin Quantum defying gravity climbing the wall // The Pool Nerd

You also get a 60-foot cable with an anti-tangle swivel, a weekly smart timer with Automation Plus™ scheduling, and SmartNav 2.0™ intelligent navigation for systematic coverage. For pools up to 50 feet, the Quantum handles it all.

It even has a HyperBrush in the front, which spins at 2 times the speed of other Dolphins—giving more scrubbing power than a lot of other cleaners I've tested.

Watch the Dolphin Quantum Review

Simply plug it in, set your schedule, and let it do the rest. No app to fuss with—just set the timer and forget it. This cleaner combines advanced ProLine™ features and the Max-Series™ MaxBin™ at a lower price than the Premier or Sigma, making it one of my top picks.

If you want commercial-grade motors, step up to the Premier or Sigma. Heavy leaves? Premier. App control? Sigma. But if you just want the best value robot that does everything for any inground pool—the Quantum is it.

Best Value: Dolphin Cayman

Pool Nerd Approved

If you're looking for a high-performing cleaner that won't break the bank but still has it all, the Dolphin Cayman is the best deal in the entire lineup. Part of the Dolphin Max-Series™, it includes everything you need and nothing you don't.

The Cayman comes with a weekly smart timer right out of the box—a feature that many budget Dolphin models strip to cut costs. Set it to run daily, every two days, or every three days, and the Cayman takes care of the rest. That's the "set and forget" experience pool owners actually want.

Powered by dual motors, the Cayman scrubs and climbs walls with ease. The HyperBrush™ spins at twice the speed of regular brushes, loosening algae and stubborn debris. The MaxBin™ is a top-loading, oversized filter that's 60% larger than comparable cleaners. Dump, rinse, done. Plus, NanoFilters are available as a free upgrade at Poolbots.com and other select retailers—giving you ProLine™-level filtration at a fraction of the cost.

For above-ground pools and inground pools up to 33 feet, the Cayman is the smart pick. It comes with a 50-foot cable and a 2-year warranty. If your pool is under 33 feet and you want wall climbing plus a timer at this price, you simply won't find a better deal. If you need waterline cleaning, step up to the Quantum.

Best Cordless: Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra

AquaSense 2 Ultra
Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra

Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra

Flagship cordless (if you insist on battery power)

Now I wouldn't personally go with a cordless robot over a corded one, but if you are dead set on cordless and want the most capable battery-powered robot I've tested, the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra sits at the top of that category—AI mapping, surface skimming, and the longest runtime in the Beatbot lineup. It still means daily retrieval and charging, weak filtration versus corded Dolphins, and an eye-watering price—but it's the cordless robot I'd pick if cordless is non-negotiable.

Runner-Up Cordless: Polaris Freedom

Runner-Up Cordless
Polaris Freedom

Polaris Freedom

Cordless from a legacy pool brand

Right below the Ultra, Polaris Freedom is my runner-up for cordless: established brand, solid wall climbing for a battery unit, and fewer unknowns than the no-name Amazon crowd. Same caveats apply—you're still recharging every day, and corded robots clean better for less hassle.

If you want a lighter cordless option from a big name, the Dolphin Liberty line (Liberty 200check price on Amazon, Liberty 300check price on Amazon) is also worth a look—I've tested those too. Full write-up with the rest of the Dolphin lineup: Best Dolphin Pool Cleaners.

They still don't perform as well as every other cleaner on my list, but I know some of my viewers still want a cordless robot. For a full breakdown of the tradeoffs, see best cordless pool robots and corded vs cordless.

Pool Nerd Tip: Certified Open Box Deals

Want the best deal around? Consider a Certified Open Box pool cleaner. These models are in like-new condition and come with full warranties, offering significant savings. You can save hundreds of dollars on a premium robot without sacrificing quality or warranty coverage.

How I Tested

Every robotic pool cleaner on this list was tested in my personal pool under the same real-world conditions. I don't rely on spec sheets or manufacturer claims—I put every robot through multiple cleaning cycles, head-to-head against competitors, in our dedicated test pool.

Every robot on this list was tested in my pool
Every robot on this list was tested in my pool // The Pool Nerd

Each robot was evaluated on suction power, wall climbing, waterline cleaning, filtration quality, navigation coverage, ease of use, and long-term reliability. I run each cleaner for at least several weeks before forming an opinion—because first impressions don't tell the whole story. Longevity matters.

I also measure real-world metrics: how full the filter gets after a single cycle, how much fine debris passes through, whether the robot misses spots or gets stuck, and how it handles corners and stairs. If a robot can't clean my pool consistently over multiple weeks, it doesn't make my list—no matter how impressive the marketing is.

The robots that made this list aren't just the best on paper. They're the ones that performed the best in the water, day after day, in my pool.

Final Verdict

So what's my final verdict?

Find yourself the right robotic pool cleaner and never look back.

A good pool robot will completely change the way you clean your pool and automate your pool maintenance.

Whether you're ready to invest in a high-end model or you're looking for a budget-friendly alternative, these are the best robotic pool cleaners for every pool type and budget.

The Dolphin Premier remains my #1 overall pick for its unmatched combination of commercial motors, Multi-Media™ filtration, Media-Alert™, and long-term reliability. The Dolphin Cayman is the value king. The Dolphin Sigma is for tech lovers who want every bell and whistle. The Dolphin Quantum is the no-regrets pick for full coverage. The Dolphin Escape dominates the above-ground market. If you insist on cordless, the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra is my top battery pick, with Polaris Freedom as runner-up—still no match for corded automation.

If you wanna keep nerding out over your pool, head on over to my deals page at ThePoolNerd.com/deals, where I post the best deals on robotic pool cleaners and other pool equipment. You can even compare products and see all the differences between the many robotic pool cleaners out there.

Until then, enjoy that pool—and I'll see you next time.
