I'm Justin with The Pool Nerd. I've been testing robotic pool cleaners for over five years, putting more than 30 robots through real-world testing in my own pool. Not a controlled lab, not a manufacturer demo pool. My pool. I track everything: cleaning paths, filtration quality, ORP readings before and after a clean, wall-climbing performance, and how each robot handles different surface types.

Gunite surfaces are in a league of their own. What works great in a fiberglass pool may barely function in yours. Let's get into it.

Gunite pools need commercial-grade motors, aggressive brushes, and NanoFiltration. Here are the only three robots I recommend after years of testing.

Why Gunite Pools Are Harder to Clean

Here's the thing most people don't realize about gunite pools: the surface itself is the problem.

Gunite pool walls require aggressive scrubbing — the rough surface traps algae and biofilm
Gunite pool walls require aggressive scrubbing — the rough surface traps algae and biofilm // The Pool Nerd

Gunite is rough. Porous. Algae doesn't just float on the surface—it grips into the texture of the plaster. Same with calcium deposits, biofilm, and general grime. Flat, smooth surfaces like fiberglass are forgiving. Gunite is not.

What that means for your robot:

  • It needs serious brushing power to actually scrub the surface—not just vacuum over it
  • It needs strong enough motors to maintain traction on rough walls
  • It needs to reach your waterline, because that's where algae camps out in any pool—and gunite's rough texture turns that into a breeding ground

If your current robot only cleans the floor, you're still out there every week scrubbing the tile line by hand. That's not pool ownership—that's servitude. Floor-only robots are a non-starter for any gunite inground pool. You need floor, walls, and waterline. Full stop.

The Gunite Chemical Tax — Why You're Paying More Than You Should

Here's the kicker that nobody talks about.

Testing pool water chemistry — gunite pools run at higher pH, reducing chlorine effectiveness
Testing pool water chemistry — gunite pools run at higher pH, reducing chlorine effectiveness // The Pool Nerd

Gunite pools—specifically the plaster or Pebble Tec finish on the interior—require a higher pH to protect the surface. Most gunite pool owners are told to keep pH between 7.4 and 7.6. That's standard pool store advice.

The problem? At a pH of 7.6, your free chlorine is roughly 50% less effective than it is at 7.2. That means you're dumping twice the chlorine into your pool just to get the same sanitization you'd get in a lower-pH fiberglass or vinyl pool. More chlorine, more chemical cost, and—here's the part that really stings—more algae if you miss even one treatment.

At The Pool Nerd, we monitor ORP—Oxidation Reduction Potential—not just chlorine ppm. ORP tells you how effective your chlorine actually is at sanitizing, not just how much of it is in the water. Our target is 650–700 mV. Below 650 mV and we're taking action. Below 600 mV and it's time to shock your pool.

A gunite pool running a standard pH protocol will struggle to stay above that 650 mV threshold without constant chemical intervention. That's the gunite tax. And it's real.

The Ondilo ICO Smart Water Monitor tracks ORP in real time — essential for gunite pool owners

So what does this have to do with your robot? A lot, actually. The cleaner you keep your pool mechanically—scrubbing the walls, maintaining the waterline, filtering fine particles—the less chemical work you're fighting against. Your robot is your first line of defense against the algae bloom that follows every chemical miss.

ORP Pro Tip: We use the Ondilo ICO Smart Water Monitor to track ORP in real time. If your gunite pool has never been ORP-monitored, you'd be surprised how much your effective chlorine fluctuates—especially in summer. Find it at ThePoolNerd.com/deals →

What Gunite Pools Specifically Need in a Robot

I've tested enough robots in enough pool types to tell you: not every robot that works beautifully in a fiberglass pool belongs in a gunite pool. Here's the checklist.

1. Commercial-Grade Motors — Non-Negotiable for Gunite

Dolphin Sigma beginning a wall climb on gunite — triple commercial motors provide unmatched traction
Dolphin Sigma beginning a wall climb on gunite — triple commercial motors provide unmatched traction // The Pool Nerd

This is the big one. Gunite walls don't let a robot cheat its way to the waterline. The robot has to grip a rough, uneven surface and haul itself up against gravity—and it has to do that every single cleaning cycle.

Residential DC motors can do it. But they work harder, run hotter, and wear faster on gunite than they do on fiberglass. Commercial-grade motors—like the ones in the Dolphin Premier and Dolphin Sigma—are a completely different class of hardware.

These are the same motors found in the Dolphin Wave commercial line. Robots that clean public pools, water parks, and resorts. Robots that sell for $2,000 to $8,000+. The Premier and Sigma bring that exact motor platform into residential pools—with waterline cleaning, NanoFilters, and a 3-year warranty that the commercial models don't even include.

For gunite, commercial motors aren't a luxury upgrade. They're the sensible choice.

2. Full Coverage — Floor, Walls, AND Waterline

Dolphin Sigma scrubbing the waterline — where 90% of algae and bacteria live in a gunite pool
Dolphin Sigma scrubbing the waterline — where 90% of algae and bacteria live in a gunite pool // The Pool Nerd

I say this for every pool type, but for gunite it's especially true: the waterline is where 90% of your bacteria and algae live. And on a gunite pool with its rough, porous waterline, that problem is amplified.

If your robot only cleans the floor, you're still out there every week scrubbing by hand. Floor-only robots are a non-starter for any gunite inground pool. You need floor, walls, and waterline—just like I recommend for every pool type.

3. Serious Scrubbing Brushes

Gunite surfaces don't respond to soft rolls. You need active scrubbing brushes that put real pressure against the surface. In my testing, robots that rely on passive brushes or minimal contact barely scratch the algae attached to gunite texture—you can run them for a week and still have green spots in the corners.

Look for robots with multiple active scrubbing brushes and independent tracks that let the robot pivot and dig into surfaces rather than just glide over them.

4. NanoFiltration — Because Gunite Sends Fine Particles Everywhere

NanoFilter vs. standard MaxBin — the difference in water clarity is not subtle on gunite pools
NanoFilter vs. standard MaxBin — the difference in water clarity is not subtle on gunite pools // The Pool Nerd

Plaster dust. Calcium particles. Fine algae spores. Gunite pools—especially newer ones or those after a resurface—shed microscopic particles that basic mesh filters don't even touch.

NanoFilters—the pleated polyester filters exclusive to Dolphin's ProLine and Max-Series—capture particles that standard filters completely miss. Think HEPA-filter precision for your pool. In my side-by-side testing, the difference in water clarity after a clean with NanoFilters vs. standard mesh is not subtle. It's not a marketing claim. You can see it.

5. A Weekly Smart Timer — Because Gunite Pools Need Consistent Cleaning

One of the worst things you can do for a gunite pool is let the cleaning schedule slip. Because of the porous surface and higher pH environment, algae gets a foothold faster than it does in fiberglass. You miss two days of cleaning and you're staring at the beginning of a green pool recovery.

A weekly smart timer means you press one button and the robot cleans itself every day—or every other day—on a set schedule. No babysitting. No forgetting. No green surprise when you open the cover on Friday.

Without a timer, you're walking outside to manually turn it on every single day. That's not automation. That's a chore.

Best Overall for Gunite: Dolphin Sigma

Dolphin Sigma cleaning the pool floor — the best residential pool robot for gunite pools
Dolphin Sigma cleaning the pool floor — the best residential pool robot for gunite pools // The Pool Nerd

The best residential pool robot on the market—and the only one purpose-built to handle everything a gunite pool throws at it.

If you own a gunite pool and you're ready to buy the right robot once and be done with it—this is it. The Dolphin Sigma is the most advanced residential pool cleaner I've ever tested, and it was practically designed for the demands of a gunite surface.

Three commercial-grade ProLine motors. The Sigma is the only residential pool robot in the world with triple commercial motors—the same motor platform that powers $2,000 to $8,000 Dolphin Wave commercial robots used at resorts and public pools. On a gunite pool, that extra motor isn't just showing off. That's the robot grinding up rough plaster walls without breaking a sweat. That's consistent waterline grip on a surface that would defeat a lesser motor. That's performance I've logged cycle after cycle in my testing.

SmartNav 3.0 with gyroscope navigation means this robot always knows exactly where it is in the pool. No random wandering. No missing corners. It maps your pool, executes a systematic route, and hits every inch of it—floor, walls, waterline—in one complete cycle.

Control the Dolphin Sigma from your phone with the myDolphin Plus app

The myDolphin Plus app gives you Wi-Fi control from anywhere. Schedule exact days and times, spot-clean from your phone with the remote drive feature, or tap Pick-Up Mode and the robot climbs to the surface to meet you—which, if you've ever wrestled a 20-pound robot out of the deep end of a gunite pool, you'll appreciate more than you can imagine right now.

Siri voice control: "Hey Siri, clean my pool." That's a real thing you can say and it will happen.

Dolphin Sigma dual NanoFilter panels — capture fine plaster dust and algae spores in gunite pools

NanoFilters included. Both XXL NanoFilter panels and standard mesh filters come in the box. For gunite, I run NanoFilters every cycle. The fine particles a gunite pool produces between cleanings are exactly what standard mesh lets through.

3-year warranty. This is the same length—actually longer—than the commercial Dolphin Wave robots that cost eight times as much. The Sigma is built to run for years. Owners regularly report 10-plus years of use with minimal repairs.

Why it's the best for gunite:

  • Triple commercial-grade ProLine motors for maximum wall traction
  • SmartNav 3.0 gyroscope navigation for systematic coverage
  • Full floor, wall, and waterline cleaning
  • Wi-Fi app control and weekly smart timer
  • NanoFilters included for fine particle capture
  • 3-year warranty

Commercial-grade power, Multi-Media filtration, and the only robot that tells you when to clean the filter. The Sigma's equal in power—just a different kind of smart.

If the Sigma is the tech-forward pick, the Dolphin Premier is the workhorse. And for a lot of gunite pool owners—especially if you've got trees dropping leaves into your pool all season—the Premier might actually be the smarter choice.

Dual commercial-grade ProLine motors. Same commercial platform as the Sigma—just two motors instead of three. Still dramatically stronger than any residential motor robot for gunite wall climbing and waterline cleaning. Same motor class as the Dolphin Wave commercial robots that run in public pools every day.

Dolphin Premier Multi-Media filtration system — four filter types for every gunite pool scenario
Dolphin Premier Multi-Media filtration system — four filter types for every gunite pool scenario // The Pool Nerd

Multi-Media Filtration is the Premier's killer feature. This is the only robot on the market that lets you swap between four different filter types in seconds:

  • NanoFilters — for deep clean days and fine particle capture

  • Standard cartridge filters — everyday use

  • Oversized Leaf Bag — when the trees are in full drop mode and you need high capacity over fine filtration

  • Disposable debris bags — for the easy toss-and-done option (optional upgrade)

Dolphin Premier Oversized Leaf Bag — essential for gunite pools surrounded by trees

For gunite pool owners with heavy tree coverage, this filtration flexibility is not a gimmick. You genuinely need the leaf bag in October when you're doing daily cleans during peak drop season. And you want the NanoFilters back in for the rest of the year. No other robot handles that range.

Dolphin Premier power supply with Media-Alert — the light blinks when the filter needs cleaning
Dolphin Premier power supply with Media-Alert — the light blinks when the filter needs cleaning // The Pool Nerd

Media-Alert — exclusive to the Premier. A light on the power supply blinks when the filter is full and needs cleaning. That's it. That's the feature. And somehow, it's the most underrated thing in the entire Dolphin lineup.

With every other robot, you're guessing when to clean the filter. The Premier just tells you. No app, no guesswork, no opening the filter to check.

No app—all controls on the power supply. If you're not a smartphone person, or you just don't want to manage another app on your phone, the Premier is built for you. Timer, scheduling, controls—all physical buttons on the power supply. Simple, reliable, works every time.

3-year warranty. Same as the Sigma. Commercial motors, long warranty, built to last.

Why it's great for gunite:

  • Dual commercial-grade ProLine motors for gunite wall traction
  • Multi-Media filtration with 4 swappable filter types
  • Media-Alert tells you exactly when to clean the filter
  • Full floor, wall, and waterline cleaning
  • Weekly smart timer for hands-off operation
  • 3-year warranty

Dolphin Quantum cleaning with its LED light — the best budget robotic pool cleaner for gunite pools // The Pool Nerd

The Quantum gives you full gunite coverage—floor, walls, waterline—with NanoFilters included and a weekly timer, at a price that makes sense for budget-conscious gunite owners.

Not everyone is going to spend Premier or Sigma money. I get it. And if the Dolphin Quantum is what fits your budget, here's what you need to know: this robot does the essential work on a gunite pool. And it does it well.

Dolphin Quantum climbing the wall — full coverage even at the budget price point

The Quantum cleans floor, walls, and waterline—that full-coverage requirement I mentioned earlier. NanoFilters are included in the box. The anti-tangle swivel cord is included. The weekly timer is included. And the XXL MaxBin—the largest filter bin in the entire Dolphin lineup—means fewer mid-cycle interruptions for filter cleaning.

NanoFilter MaxBin closeup — included in the box with the Dolphin Quantum
NanoFilter MaxBin closeup — included in the box with the Dolphin Quantum // The Pool Nerd

What the Quantum doesn't have: commercial-grade motors. It runs residential DC motors—and they clean gunite pools every day all over the country. They work. But if your gunite pool has a lot of wall coverage, steep angles, or you're in a warm climate running daily cleans year-round, you will get more life out of commercial motors. The Quantum is a great robot. The Premier and Sigma are a different class.

That said—if you're upgrading from a suction cleaner or a pressure-side cleaner, the Quantum is going to feel like a revelation. It's both ProLine and Max-Series—the only Dolphin that sits in both categories—which means you get premium filtration with easy maintenance. No regrets.

Why it's great for gunite:

  • Full floor, wall, and waterline cleaning
  • NanoFilters and XXL MaxBin included
  • Anti-tangle swivel cord
  • Weekly smart timer
  • Both ProLine and Max-Series classification
  • Best value in the Dolphin lineup for gunite coverage

What to Avoid: Cordless Robots in Gunite Pools

Pool Nerd Disapproved

Cordless robots like the Aiper Seagull Pro don't belong in gunite pools — weak motors and battery safety concerns
Cordless robots like the Aiper Seagull Pro don't belong in gunite pools — weak motors and battery safety concerns // The Pool Nerd

I'll keep this short because I've said it before and I'll say it again: cordless robots don't belong in gunite pools.

Battery-powered robots have smaller motors—because every watt they pull comes from a battery that has to last 2–3 hours before dying. That's not the motor power you need to haul a robot up a rough gunite wall and keep it pressed against the surface to clean your waterline. The physics just don't work in your favor.

You're also dealing with daily recharging—pull the robot out (with a hook, because there's no cord to guide it to the surface), charge it for 3–5 hours, put it back in. That's not automation. That's a chore you signed up for every single day.

And then there's the safety issue. The CPSC recalled Aiper's Seagull Pro for battery overheating and fire risk. We covered this extensively—there are documented reports of house fires linked to cordless pool robot charging. Read our full coverage of the Aiper pool cleaner fires and the Aiper Seagull Pro recall.

Corded Dolphins plug in once, clean on a schedule, and run for 10-plus years on commercial motors with almost no maintenance. That's the comparison. Every time.

For the full breakdown, read our corded vs. cordless robotic pool cleaners guide.

Pool Nerd Disapproved: Cordless robots in gunite pools. Weak motors, daily charging hassle, no automation, and unresolved battery safety concerns. Pass.

Your Robot and Your Chemistry Work Together

I want to leave you with something that isn't in any robot manufacturer's marketing material.

Ondilo ICO Smart Water Monitor floating in a gunite pool — real-time ORP tracking changes everything
Ondilo ICO Smart Water Monitor floating in a gunite pool — real-time ORP tracking changes everything // The Pool Nerd

A robotic pool cleaner doesn't replace your chemical routine. But it makes it work dramatically better.

Here's why: every time your robot scrubs your gunite walls and vacuums the floor, it's physically removing the organic matter—algae, body oils, debris—that consumes your chlorine before it can do its job. That means your sanitizer lasts longer, your ORP stays higher, and you're spending less money on chemicals.

For gunite pools especially, where the chemical load is already higher because of pH requirements, getting the mechanical cleaning right is the single best thing you can do to reduce your annual chemical spend. In my experience, switching from a suction cleaner to a Dolphin with NanoFilters cut the frequency of chemical corrections meaningfully—because the water was actually cleaner to begin with.

Ondilo ICO app showing real-time pool chemistry data — know exactly when your gunite pool needs attention
Ondilo ICO app showing real-time pool chemistry data — know exactly when your gunite pool needs attention // The Pool Nerd

Monitor your water. I use the Ondilo ICO Smart Water Monitor. It tracks ORP, pH, temperature, and more in real time, and sends alerts to my phone. If you're running a gunite pool on traditional test strips and pool store visits, you're flying blind. Find the ICO at ThePoolNerd.com/deals.

Final Verdict

For gunite pools, you need: commercial-grade motors, full floor/wall/waterline coverage, active scrubbing brushes, NanoFiltration, and a weekly smart timer. Anything less is leaving performance on the table and paying more in chemicals to compensate.
