Concrete pools are the hardest surface type for a robot to clean. The texture, the chemistry, the rough plaster—it all matters. After testing over 30 robotic pool cleaners in my own pool over the past five-plus years, here's exactly what works, what doesn't, and what I'd actually recommend for your backyard.
Not all pool surfaces are created equal. The robot that works great for a vinyl liner pool or a fiberglass pool isn't necessarily the right robot for your concrete pool. I've put everything from the budget bots to the flagship ProLine™ models through their paces—and today I'm cutting through all of it so you don't have to.
Best Robotic Pool Cleaners for Concrete Pools at a Glance
Concrete and gunite pools demand more scrubbing power, better filtration, and stronger motors than any other surface type. Here are the robots that deliver.
Before we get into my top picks, let's talk about why concrete pools are different—because if you skip this part, you might buy the wrong robot entirely.
Why Concrete and Gunite Pools Are Different
If you're a concrete pool owner, you already know the deal. Concrete is rough. Gunite is rougher. That textured surface is beautiful—but it's also a magnet for algae, fine debris, and calcium deposits that get into every little crevice and don't let go easily.
There are a few things that make concrete pools uniquely challenging for robotic cleaners:
-
The surface is abrasive. Brushes wear faster on gunite and plaster than they do on vinyl or fiberglass. You need a robot with serious scrubbing power—not just suction.
-
Wall climbing is harder. Rougher surfaces require more grip and more motor power to stay planted on the walls, especially when pushing up toward the waterline.
-
Fine debris is everywhere. Gunite pools tend to trap microscopic particles in the texture of the plaster. Standard mesh filters on budget robots? Those particles blow right through and go back into your water. This is why NanoFiltration matters so much for concrete pools.
-
The waterline is a disaster zone. Calcium scale, sunscreen oils, algae—they all accumulate right at the waterline on concrete pools more aggressively than any other surface type. If your robot doesn't clean the waterline, you're still out there with a scrub brush. Every. Single. Week.
Waterline cleaning is critical for concrete pool owners // The Pool Nerd
And then there's the chemistry angle. This one surprises people.
The Gunite Tax: Why Concrete Pools Cost More to Maintain
Concrete and gunite pools need to be maintained at a higher pH than vinyl or fiberglass. The plaster will deteriorate if your pH drops too low. So most gunite pool owners are targeting somewhere in the 7.2 to 7.4 range—and the conventional pool store crowd will tell you to push it even higher, to 7.4 to 7.6.
Here's the kicker: every single point of pH increase cuts your chlorine's effectiveness roughly in half. At pH 7.5, your chlorine is only about 50% effective. At 7.8? You're down to around 20%. This means you need significantly more chlorine to achieve the same sanitizing power—and that adds up fast. Concrete pool owners are often spending two to three times what a fiberglass pool owner spends on chemicals just because of this chemistry dynamic. I call it the Gunite Tax.
The way I recommend monitoring this is with ORP (oxidation-reduction potential), not just chlorine parts per million. ORP tells you the actual oxidizing power of your water. I run the Ondilo ICO Smart Water Monitor in my pool, which tracks ORP in real time and sends alerts to my phone when something's off.
Pool Nerd ORP Checkpoints
650–700 mV → Ideal range. Your water is properly sanitized.
Below 650 mV → Take action. Add chlorine and recheck.
Below 600 mV → Shock your pool. Don't wait.
Why am I bringing this up in a guide about robotic pool cleaners? Because a great robot reduces your chemical costs significantly by keeping debris, algae, and organic material out of your water before it breaks down your chlorine. The better your robot cleans—especially at the waterline and walls—the less you're fighting the Gunite Tax. These things are connected.

The Concrete Pool Checklist: What to Look For
After testing over 30 robots, I've boiled it down to five non-negotiables for concrete pool owners specifically. Run any robot through this checklist before you buy.
1. Corded Power — Non-Negotiable
Do not buy a cordless robot for your concrete pool. Cordless robots run on lithium-ion batteries. They run for 2 to 3 hours, then sit dead in your pool while they recharge for another 3 to 5 hours. That's not automation—that's babysitting. And on a rough gunite surface, the weaker motors in most cordless units can't generate enough suction or wall-climbing force to actually clean the way your pool needs.
And then there's the safety issue. The CPSC recalled the Aiper Seagull Pro in 2025 due to risks of battery overheating and fire. There have been serious incidents. I don't feel comfortable recommending cordless right now.
A corded Dolphin runs on continuous power—4,000+ GPH—with no drop-off, no recharging, and no babysitting. That's the baseline.
2. Weekly Smart Timer — Real Automation
A robot without a weekly timer is not automatic. You're walking outside every single morning to turn it on. A weekly smart timer means you press one button—or set a schedule in an app—and the robot turns itself on, cleans your pool, and shuts off. Every day. On schedule.
For concrete pool owners especially, daily cleaning matters more than it does for other surfaces. Fine debris and algae settle into the texture of your plaster fast. A robot that runs daily on a timer is pool maintenance you literally don't have to think about.
3. NanoFiltration — Because Standard Filters Aren't Enough
Most budget robots don't tell you this: their standard plastic mesh filters have big pores. Fine sand, algae spores, and microscopic debris pass straight through and go right back into your water. Your pool looks clean. The water stays cloudy. You add more chemicals.
NanoFilters are a completely different animal. They're Gen-2 pleated polyester filters with micro-pores tight enough to capture the stuff that standard filters completely miss—think HEPA-filter precision for your pool.
For gunite and plaster pools where fine particles get trapped in the surface texture and constantly re-enter the water column, this is the single biggest filtration upgrade you can make. In my side-by-side testing, the NanoFilters captured a genuinely shocking amount of particles that went straight through the standard mesh.
4. Full Coverage — Floor, Walls, and Waterline
The waterline is where 90%+ of bacteria and algae live. In a concrete pool, that waterline is also where calcium scale, sunscreen oils, and biofilm accumulate fastest. If your robot only cleans the floor, you're still scrubbing by hand. Every week.
For any inground concrete pool, full coverage—floor, walls, and waterline—is the gold standard. Period.
5. Commercial-Grade Motors — The Game Changer for Concrete
This is where concrete pool owners get a bigger return on investment than anyone else. Commercial-grade motors aren't just more powerful in theory—on a rough gunite surface, you can literally feel the difference. Stronger wall climbing. Better grip. More suction pulling debris out of the textured plaster surface.
The Dolphin Premier and Dolphin Sigma use commercial-grade ProLine™ motors—the exact same motors from the Dolphin Wave commercial robots that clean public pools and resort properties. Those commercial Wave units sell for two thousand to eight thousand dollars. You're getting that same motor platform at a residential price.
Best Overall: Dolphin Premier — The Best Robot for Concrete Pools
I've tested every Dolphin in the lineup. I've tested robots from Aiper, Beatbot, Wybot, and everyone in between. For a concrete or gunite pool, nothing I've tested compares to the Dolphin Premier. This is my number one pick. Full stop.
Commercial-Grade Motors That Actually Matter on Gunite
The Premier runs on dual commercial-grade ProLine™ motors—the same motor platform as Dolphin Wave commercial robots that clean resorts and public pools for two to eight thousand dollars. On a rough gunite surface, these motors mean stronger wall climbing, better waterline grip, and more suction pulling debris out of the textured plaster.
In my testing, the Premier climbed my gunite walls and locked onto the waterline in a way that residential-motor robots simply couldn't match. I watched it happen. Multiple times.
Multi-Media Filtration — Built for Heavy Debris
Concrete pools and trees are often neighbors. The Premier's Multi-Media™ filtration system gives you four filter options you can swap out in seconds: NanoFilters for the deepest clean, standard cartridges for everyday use, an oversized leaf bag for heavy debris seasons, and optional disposable bags when you want toss-and-done simplicity. No other robot in the lineup—or in this price range—gives you that kind of flexibility.
Media-Alert — Exclusive to the Premier
This is a genuine differentiator. The Media-Alert™ is a light on the Premier's power supply that blinks when the filter is full and needs cleaning. No other Dolphin has this. Not even the Sigma. With every other robot, you're guessing when the filter's dirty—either you check it manually or you wait until cleaning performance drops off. The Premier just tells you. It's a small feature that makes a real quality-of-life difference over years of ownership.
Everything Else
The Premier covers floor, walls, and waterline for pools up to 50 feet. Sixty-foot anti-tangle swivel cord. NanoFilters included. Weekly smart timer built right into the power supply—no app needed, just physical buttons. And a 3-year warranty, which is 50% longer than the standard lineup.
Here's the kicker: the Premier has NanoFilters™, Multi-Media™ filtration, Media-Alert™, a weekly smart timer, and a 3-year warranty. The $2,000–$8,000 Dolphin Wave commercial robots—the ones cleaning resort pools—don't have any of those features. You're getting commercial power with residential intelligence.

Best Splurge: Dolphin Sigma — Triple Commercial Motors + App Control
If you want the absolute best of the best—and you love controlling things from your phone—the Dolphin Sigma is the top of the line. This is the most powerful residential pool robot I've tested.
The Sigma is the only residential pool robot with three commercial-grade ProLine™ motors. Same platform as the Dolphin Wave commercial line. On a gunite surface, that third motor translates directly to more aggressive suction, stronger wall grip, and better waterline cleaning than even the Premier can deliver. When I ran these side by side, the Sigma's raw power was noticeable.
The navigation is next-level. A gyroscope for real-time position tracking—the same technology found in aircraft—paired with SmartNav 3.0™ means the Sigma knows exactly where it's been and where it needs to go. On complex pool shapes with curves and angles (which a lot of custom gunite pools have), this matters.
Then there's the myDolphin Plus™ app. Wi-Fi connected. Control from anywhere. You can set exact cleaning days and times—not just intervals, but actual scheduled times, like every Friday at 4 PM. Remote drive lets you steer it to a dirty corner from your phone. Pick-Up mode makes the robot climb to the surface so you don't have to fish it out. And Siri voice control is a thing—"Hey Siri, clean my pool" and it starts working.
NanoFilters included. Sixty-foot anti-tangle swivel cord. Quad scrubbing brushes with independent bi-directional tracks. Three-year warranty. For tech-focused buyers with large or complex gunite pools, the Sigma is the pick.
One caveat: the Sigma controls are app-only. There are no physical buttons on the power supply. If you want hands-on button control—or the Media-Alert™ filter indicator—the Premier is the better fit.
Pool Nerd Approved: Dolphin Sigma
Best for: Tech-savvy owners with large or complex gunite pools
Coverage: Floor + Walls + Waterline
Motors: Triple commercial-grade ProLine™ (only residential robot with 3 motors)
Navigation: Gyroscope + SmartNav 3.0™
App: myDolphin Plus™ (Wi-Fi, scheduling, remote drive, Siri control)
Pool Size: Up to 50 ft | Warranty: 3 Years

Best Value: Dolphin Quantum — The No-Regrets Pick
Not everyone wants to spend Premier or Sigma money. The Dolphin Quantum is the robot I call the no-regrets pick—and for good reason.
The Quantum is the only robot in the entire Dolphin lineup that is both ProLine™ AND Max-Series™. That means you get NanoFilters and waterline cleaning from the ProLine side, plus the XXL MaxBin™—the largest filter basket in the entire lineup—from the Max-Series side. Two hundred and twenty-five percent more capacity than standard Dolphin robots. Over 400 square inches of filtration surface area. For a concrete pool where fine debris is constantly re-entering the water, that filter size is a real-world advantage.
PowerJet 3D Mobility™ jets move horizontally along the tile line for consistent waterline cleaning. Sixty-foot anti-tangle swivel cord. Weekly smart timer with Automation Plus™ scheduling. SmartNav 2.0™ intelligent navigation for systematic floor and wall coverage. No app to fuss with—just set the timer and forget it.
Where does the Quantum fall short for concrete pool owners? Residential motors. It cleans beautifully, but it doesn't have the commercial-grade grip and suction of the Premier or Sigma. On a particularly rough or hilly gunite surface, that motor difference shows up in wall-climbing consistency. If you have heavy leaves or a complex concrete surface, step up to the Premier. If budget is a real factor and your pool is relatively straightforward, the Quantum earns every bit of its reputation.
Pool Nerd Approved: Dolphin Quantum
Best for: Inground concrete pools up to 50 ft — max value without commercial motors
Coverage: Floor + Walls + Waterline
Motors: Dual residential (not commercial-grade)
Filtration: XXL MaxBin™ (225% more capacity) + NanoFilters™ included
Pool Size: Up to 50 ft | Warranty: 2 Years

Best Budget: Dolphin Cayman — Solid Value for Smaller Concrete Pools
If your concrete pool is under 33 feet and you're watching the budget, the Dolphin Cayman is the best deal in the lineup. It doesn't clean the waterline—that's the one caveat—but everything else it does well.
The Cayman comes with a weekly smart timer right out of the box—a feature that a lot of budget robots strip to cut costs. Set it to run daily, every two days, or every three days. It cleans floors and walls with the HyperBrush™ spinning at twice the speed of standard brushes. HyperGrip™ tracks give it solid contact on textured gunite surfaces. SmartNav 2.0™ means it's navigating intelligently, not wandering randomly.
NanoFilters are available as a free upgrade at Poolbots.com—just add them to your cart and use the code. That gives you ProLine™-level filtration at a Max-Series™ price.
The limitation: no waterline cleaning, no commercial motors, no swivel. For smaller concrete pools where manual waterline maintenance is manageable, the Cayman is a smart choice. If you need waterline cleaning—and for most inground concrete pools I'd say you do—step up to the Quantum.
Pool Nerd Approved: Dolphin Cayman
Best for: Smaller concrete pools (under 33 ft) on a budget
Coverage: Floor + Walls (no waterline)
Motors: Dual residential
Filtration: MaxBin™ + free NanoFilter™ upgrade at Poolbots.com
Pool Size: Up to 33 ft | Warranty: 2 Years

A Word About Cordless Robots
Pool Nerd Warning: Cordless Robots
Cordless robots are not recommended for concrete or gunite pools.
Weaker motors struggle to grip and climb rough gunite surfaces.
2–3 hour run times followed by 3–5 hours of charging — that's not automation.
CPSC recall history: Aiper Seagull Pro recalled in 2025 for battery overheating risk.
If you want cordless: look at Dolphin Liberty or Polaris Freedom. But go corded if you can.
I know some of you are set on cordless no matter what. If that's you, at least go with a reputable brand—Dolphin Liberty or Polaris Freedom. They're legitimate products from established companies, unlike some of the fire-recall brands still marketing heavily online. But in my professional opinion, for a concrete pool? Corded is always the right call.
For the full breakdown on this topic, read my guide on corded vs cordless robotic pool cleaners or my best cordless robotic pool cleaners guide if you're still considering it.

Final Verdict
So what's the bottom line for concrete and gunite pool owners?
You need corded power, a weekly smart timer, NanoFiltration, full waterline coverage, and—if at all possible—commercial-grade motors. The rough texture of gunite demands more from a robot than any other surface type. The Gunite Tax on your chemistry is real, and a great robot directly reduces what you're spending on chemicals by keeping your water cleaner at the source.
My number one pick for concrete pools is the Dolphin Premier. Commercial motors, Multi-Media™ filtration, the exclusive Media-Alert™, three-year warranty. It's the best combination of power, intelligence, and value I've found after five-plus years of testing. If you want the absolute peak—app control, triple motors, and gyroscope navigation—the Dolphin Sigma is breathtaking. If you want the best value that still does everything, the Dolphin Quantum is the no-regrets pick. And for smaller concrete pools on a budget, the Dolphin Cayman punches above its weight class.
Whatever you go with, do yourself a favor and go corded. You'll thank yourself.
