Best Robotic Pool Cleaners for Concrete Pools

Concrete pools are the hardest surface type for a robot to clean. The texture, the chemistry, the rough plaster—it all matters. After testing over 30 robotic pool cleaners in my own pool over the past five-plus years, here's exactly what works, what doesn't, and what I'd actually recommend for your backyard.

Not all pool surfaces are created equal. The robot that works great for a vinyl liner pool or a fiberglass pool isn't necessarily the right robot for your concrete pool. Concrete and gunite pools need to be maintained at a higher pH than vinyl or fiberglass. The plaster will deteriorate if your pH drops too low. So most gunite pool owners are targeting somewhere in the 7.2 to 7.4 range—and the conventional pool store crowd will tell you to push it even higher, to 7.4 to 7.6.

Here's the kicker: every single point of pH increase cuts your chlorine's effectiveness roughly in half. At pH 7.5, your chlorine is only about 50% effective. At 7.8? You're down to around 20%. This means you need significantly more chlorine to achieve the same sanitizing power—and that adds up fast. Concrete pool owners are often spending two to three times what a fiberglass pool owner spends on chemicals just because of this chemistry dynamic. I call it the Gunite Tax.
