Pool Winterizing Calculator
Plan closing chlorine, lowered water volume, pipe volume, and antifreeze without replacing the full closing procedure
Plan your closingHow to use
Calculate Closing Quantities
Winterizing is a system procedure, not a chemical recipe. These quantities support a closing plan; they do not determine valve positions, line-blowing sequence, water level, plugs, or freeze protection for your equipment.
Choose from your CYA-based closing method and product directions.
Use 0 if your cover/system instructions say not to lower.
Uses approximate Schedule 40 inside diameter.

What This Winterizing Calculator Does
This tool calculates four planning quantities:
- Liquid chlorine required to move from current FC to your chosen closing target
- Gallons removed by a planned water-level drop
- Approximate internal volume of entered PVC plumbing
- A pool-antifreeze planning amount based on that pipe volume
It does not invent a universal closing recipe. Pool type, cover, skimmers, returns, water features, climate, plumbing layout, groundwater, and equipment all change the procedure.
Use it alongside the complete pool-closing guide and every equipment manual.
Closing Chlorine and Water Balance
Close clear, clean, and balanced water. A cover does not cure algae, and winter is not a substitute for proper sanitation.
The calculator uses the liquid-chlorine relationship:
Gallons of product = FC increase × pool gallons ÷ product strength % ÷ 10,000
One gallon of 10% liquid chlorine raises 10,000 gallons by approximately 10 ppm. Product age and storage conditions can reduce real strength.
Choose a closing target appropriate for your CYA and method. Do not blindly apply a generic “shock” number. Excess chlorine can damage some covers and surfaces, while inadequate sanitation can produce a green opening.
Balance pH, alkalinity, calcium, and saturation for the surface and equipment before shutdown. Use the pool chemistry calculator for those adjustments.
How Much Water to Lower
One inch over one square foot equals approximately 0.623 gallons:
Gallons removed = surface area × level drop in inches × 0.623
Whether the pool should be lowered at all depends on the closing system. Some owners lower below returns; others use expansion plugs, skimmer devices, or covers designed for a higher operating level. An automatic cover can have its own water-level requirement.
Do not over-drain. Groundwater, shell support, vinyl exposure, fiberglass movement, and winter precipitation all matter. Follow the pool and cover instructions.
Plumbing Volume and Pool Antifreeze
The calculator estimates pipe volume from approximate Schedule 40 inside diameter:
Pipe volume = π × radius² × length × 7.48052 gallons per cubic foot
Real systems contain different diameters, fittings, valves, equipment, elevation changes, and branches. Add each line separately for better accuracy or use a conservative total length.
Pool antifreeze is supplemental protection. The primary freeze-defense work is normally:
- Blow each line correctly.
- Isolate it while air is flowing.
- Install the correct rated plug or expansion device.
- Drain equipment according to its manual.
- Protect water features and hidden branches.
Use only non-toxic swimming-pool antifreeze labeled for that application. Never use automotive antifreeze.
What the Calculator Cannot Winterize
The tool cannot see:
- Main-drain configuration
- Check valves and bypass loops
- Attached spas and spillovers
- Heaters and heat exchangers
- Salt cells, chlorinators, UV systems, and chemical feeders
- Solar panels
- Waterfalls, deck jets, slides, and cleaners
- Autofill and overflow plumbing
- Filter drain and multiport-valve requirements
- Automation freeze-protection settings
Missing one trapped branch can cause an expensive freeze break. If the plumbing map is unknown or the climate has sustained freezes, hire an experienced local pool professional.
Pool Winterizing Calculator FAQ
How much liquid chlorine should I add at closing?
Enter tested current FC, your method’s CYA-based closing target, pool gallons, and actual product strength. The calculator returns the dose for that increase.
Should I lower the pool below the skimmer?
Not universally. The correct level depends on the skimmer protection, return plugs, cover, structure, precipitation, and local method. Follow the applicable instructions.
Does antifreeze replace blowing out pool lines?
No. It is supplemental protection. Lines still need to be correctly cleared, isolated, and plugged according to the system design.
Can I use RV antifreeze?
Use only a product explicitly labeled and suitable for swimming-pool plumbing and follow that label. Never assume products with similar color or base chemistry are interchangeable.
How do I account for several pipe sizes?
Calculate each diameter and length separately, then add the pipe volumes. The single-entry tool can also use a conservative combined estimate, but that is less precise.
Is winterizing needed in a mild climate?
The procedure may be different, but reduced use still requires circulation, sanitation, water-level management, debris control, and freeze planning for occasional cold events. Do not copy a hard-close procedure without considering local conditions.
